Make a note of wins that you have
Have a notebook to keep track of new things that you learn, or things that you’ve done well, so that you can look back on it and see how much you’ve achieved.
Also keep notes of any new findings and interesting things you’ve found out as well, so that you don’t have to keep guessing every time you come back to the guitar as to what you found out last time you practised.
I hope these five tips will help you get motivated and kick start your guitar playing!
Are you trying to become the next Steve Vai?
Or are you trying to impress a girl in class?

Make sure you are practising; do you know what practising actually entails?
Practising compared to playing the guitar is very different. A lot of guitarists struggle to know the difference. When you are practising, you need to be working on new challenging things all the time. Casually playing doesn’t count as practising. If you aren’t making mistakes, then it’s not practising.
Now you can play the guitar for fun. I’m not saying don’t do that. But when you are practising, that’s for improving your guitar playing.
If you get a guitar teacher who knows exactly how to get you to your goal then even better! They can keep you accountable and enthusiastic about learning. It does still require effort from you, but it will at least give you a path to follow. And the best teachers will mentor you through your challenges as well.
Have someone to keep you motivated
Make sure you know what you need to do to get to your goals that you wrote down in the first place. If you don’t know how to achieve those things than you may need some help! Otherwise it is easy to get demotivated if you feel like you are going around in circles, wondering what the best YouTube video to look up is next.
External forces that may help you include being in a band if that’s part of your goal. However, that may not be the most efficient way of improving your guitar playing. But it can be a lot of fun depending on who your band mates are!
We want to make sure there is minimal effort between you coming home from work or school to getting on that guitar and practising even when you don’t feel like it.
Or when you get up extra early to get an extra 15 minutes in before work. Get the room set up ready to go. Have your tuner ready, have your guitar out of it’s case. Any notes etc. have it all ready for you.
